Tharindi Fernando
is a young, up and coming actress in the Sri Lankan film industry. She was initially a banker, and with no acting training, and after she began her career in film, she has gone on to act and win awards in several teledramas, including ‘Kodi Gaha Yata’ (2023). My Red Comrade is Fernando’s first lead role in a feature film. This role was challenging as the genre of the film was of a serious manner more than her previous works, and her character had many dialogues and carried majority of the story. Additionally, this role required single, long-takes with extensive monologues (3 in total) and was a challenge as she had never performed in such an intense role before. She undertook acting training and workshops with acting coach Prasanna Mahagamage to prepare for this character. Working very closely with Mahagamage and Mahadivulwewa, Fernando manages to showcase a multidimensional character in this film, subtly revealing each layer of her character ‘She’ in an effortless manner.
Fernando’s acting capacity is seen to its fullest within the 90 minutes of this film, achieving an emotionally charged performance which leaves viewers waiting for more. With humble beginnings, Tharindi Fernando has taken this challenging role and delivered an exceptional performance, completely transforming herself into the style of serious cinema acting, thus showing us a promising future as an actress in Sri Lankan cinema.
